At least once a month, I break down the top song on Spotify The song is the #1 song streaming on Spotify at whatever point I start writing the post, so it might not be in the #1 spot by the end of the week when it goes live. I’ll look at the lyrics and the music, and try to make it fun along the way.

Wide-Angle

Bruno Mars is definitely making some money lately. He’s got the top two spots on the charts, and he just knocked himself to #2 with this song while pushing himself back up to #1 at the same time. I saw this song on the charts for a few weeks and I wasn’t interested in it because I thought that with a name like this it would be silly. I wasn’t wrong. But it’s definitely more interesting than I thought

This is a collaboration between Rosé and Bruno. So who’s Rosé, anyway? And how did she shoot to the top of the charts out of nowhere?

This song catapults us into the niche but insanely popular world of K-pop, Korean pop music. It’s an industry dominated by supergroups that train to sing, dance, play instruments, and sometimes model for years with highly effective companies before launching into the public eye with an intense touring routine.

Rosé is part of the “girl group” Blackpink, formed in 2016 with three other girls. She’s from New Zealand and is the child of South Korean immigrants. Her father convinced her to audition for YG Entertainment, a South Korean record label, and she moved to South Korea to train for four years in 2012, after finishing first of 700 participants.

All this to say that she’s bursting onto the charts because she’s actually been around for a while, first training in relative obscurity and then singing and dancing in a K-pop supergroup for seven years. Now she has a solo career along with her Blackpink touring schedule, and her first album just came out yesterday. She’s practically the next Jungkook (that’s another story).

And in case this seems silly to anyone, a quick note about the popularity of K-pop: one of Blackpink’s debut songs, “Boombayah,” has 1.7 billion views on YouTube over the eight years since its release. Billion. By comparison, the Joe Rogan–Trump interview has 52 million views. Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” has 1.8 billion. A lot of people listen to K-pop. Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’s “Uptown Funk” has 5.4 billion views, incidentally.

And no wonder — it’s well produced and it’s performed by artists who have grueling training regimens. They come out as master dancers, singers, multi-instrumentalists, and PR reps for their groups before they reach thirty.

Enough about K-pop.

Rosé met Bruno Mars last year at a concert in Seoul, where a friend arranged a meeting, After that, she talked to him a few times and ended up inviting him to join in “APT.”
