April Showers
A lyric poem/nature poem
Each month my Personal Patron–level subscribers choose a theme for me to write on in my free Tuesday and Friday posts. I can sprinkle that theme throughout the month or write a poem dedicated to it. This month, one patron requested “rain,” and the other requested “spring and how things bloom/change.” This poem is about both, and I may come around to that second theme a bit more directly later in the month. It’s also about the beauty of rain, even though we might grumble about it from time to time. Here’s “April Showers”:
April showers bring May flowers May bring flowers, if it showers Flowers from the shower hours Shower over April plants. Puffy nimbus brings the droplets Brings the droplets as it drops it, Droplets, nimbus never stops it Nimbus empties showers out. Days so dreary, leaving weary Dreary, with the windows bleary Windows wet and landscape dreary Wet and slick with April rain. Land is deluged, dry, and long-fried Dry until it retains rain's cry Retains rain's nigh cry, its wet sigh Nigh to quench the sick ground's parch. Life for land; for whining folks, strife Whining, seeing water as knife Water, smooth and sweet as light fife Sweet to land and man alike. Rain again on weary, brown plains, Weary, as the people complain People could use mental reframe Mental train to love outdoors. May has flowers, much as raindrops Flowers after April's rain stops April brings rain's lovely plip-plops Lovely as flowers of May.
If you want the opportunity to set a theme for the month, you’d have to pay hundreds of dollars annually. You’re welcome to do that. If you don’t prefer that, you could pay $10 a month and get a poem written for you each month to your exact specifications (something the Personal Patrons get as well).
